Uses / Indications:
It is used in the treatment of infection caused by sensitive organisms such as acute bacterial sinusitis (adequately diagnosed),Acute otitis media, Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (adequately diagnosed), Community acquired pneumonia, Cystitis, Pyelonephritis, Skin and soft tissue infections in particular cellulitis, animal bites, severe dental abscess with spreading cellulitis and Bone and joint infections, in particular osteomyelitis.
Expert advice:
For adults and children ≥ 40 kg, this formulation of Co-amoxiclav 400/57mg/5ml Powder for Oral Suspension provides a total daily dose of 1750 mg amoxicillin/250 mg clavulanic acid with twice daily dosing and 2625 mg amoxicillin/375 mg clavulanic acid with three times daily dosing, when administered as recommended below. For children < 40 kg, this formulation of Co-amoxiclav 400/57mg/5ml Powder for Oral Suspension provides a maximum daily dose of 1000-2800 mg amoxicillin/143-400 mg clavulanic acid, when administered as recommended below. If it is considered that a higher daily dose of amoxicillin is required, it is recommended that another preparation of Co-amoxiclav 400/57mg/5ml Powder for Oral Suspension is selected in order to avoid administration of unnecessarily high daily doses of clavulanic acid.
Side Effects:
The most commonly reported adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
How to use:
Co-amoxiclav is usually given three times a day. This should be first thing in the morning, early afternoon (or after school) and at bedtime. Ideally, these times are at least 4 hours apart.Give the medicine at about the same times each day so that this becomes part of your child’s daily routine, which will help you to remember.
How it works:
Co-amoxiclav contains two medicines: amoxicillin, which is an antibiotic, and clavulanic acid, which helps the amoxicillin to work better.
